The lectorate Wind Energy aims to make a significant contribution to the successful developments of wind energy. In doing so, the lectorate mainly focuses on the important prerequisites like a further reduction of the costs per kWh and increasing the social acceptance of wind energy.
A key premise for the Wind Energy lectorate is the view that dependence on non-sustainable energy sources (e.g., fossil or nuclear) constitutes on of the greatest global problems. This is partly a consequence of the environmental and climate impact of non-sustainable sources. Furthermore, conventional energy sources are finite and often originate from politically unstable regions. This is accompanied by a continuous uncertainty regarding provision and price levels.
To address these problems, there is an increasing focus on sustainable energy. Although it can be assumed that the future sustainable energy supply will consist of a mix of sources, wind energy is one of the most promising ones. This is partly due to its relative low costs and the great potential of this energy source. Important conditions of the successful development of wind energy includes a further reduction in costs per kWh and an increase in social acceptance.
The lectorate Wind Energy aims to contribute to fulfilling these preconditions, primarily focusing on technological solutions. Given the fact that there are numerous technological possibilities for further reducing the cost of off-shore wind energy and considering that social acceptance is a significantly smaller issue for off-shore wind energy compared to on-shore applications, it is logical to focus on offshore wind energy.
