Hydrogen is a lightweight, versatile and energy-rich gas that can be used for heating, mobility and industrial processes. Because hydrogen has different physical and safety characteristics than natural gas, working with hydrogen networks requires specialised knowledge and skills.
Professionals who already work with gas networks, or who will do so in the future, need to be prepared for this new reality. This short course provides up-to-date, practice-oriented expertise for working safely and responsibly with hydrogen distribution networks.
This short course has been developed for:
The programme consists of an e-learning module, complemented by classroom-based theory sessions and practical training. Topics include:
1. Physical analysis and system characteristics
You will understand the unique properties of hydrogen, such as flammability, molecular size and detectability, in comparison with natural gas. You will be able to explain which system modifications, components and materials are required to ensure a safe hydrogen network.
2. Safety and risk management
You will identify and assess safety risks such as leaks and flashback events, select appropriate mitigation measures, and correctly apply safety protocols and regulations, including VIAG guidelines.
3. Fault analysis and emergency management
You will locate and diagnose faults, determine the appropriate intervention strategy and carry out repairs, even under time pressure or unusual operating conditions.
4. Operational processes (for Technicians)
You will independently perform operational tasks, including nitrogen and hydrogen purging procedures and the interpretation of gas analyses (O₂, H₂ and N₂).
5. Coordination and work preparation (for Work Supervisors)
You will coordinate work plans, translate procedures into practice, lead pre-job safety briefings and ensure compliance with quality and safety standards.
