Sustainable mobility is an exceedingly relevant subject, because the transportation sector causes almost 20% of all CO2 emissions and because reachability and livability are a high priority on the regional agenda. Sustainable mobility is primarily about interdisciplinary, practice-oriented research about smart and green solutions and interventions, where technology, system integration and behavior meet.
Technology mainly concerns the kind of propulsion used (like hydrogen), auto pilot and new types of transportation (like a hyperloop or city bikes). Integration is about the way various transportation methods are connected and how electric vehicles can be used as energy storage. And behavior is about how we can influence people to travel in a sustainable way.
Challenges sustainable mobility
- Considering the energy infrastructure, available sources, demand, and technical possibilities, how can sustainable mobility be shaped? Which new technical solutions can accelerate sustainable mobility at the local and regional level? How can these solutions be implemented, and with what results?
- What is the role of sustainable gases and fuels, such as hydrogen, BioLNG, and ethanol, in sustainable mobility and logistics? When is it efficient to use a certain gas for passenger transport and for freight transport by road, water, and air?
- What are the consequences of transport choices regarding the accessibility of areas, and how do we ensure transport stays affordable for everyone? How can we stimulate concepts like shared mobility, and how do we ensure that public spaces are less dominated by cars?
- What considerations can increase or hinder public support for transport innovations such as the hyperloop? How can we influence public behavior in their transport choices? Are financial incentives sufficient, or are other interventions needed? How can we stimulate concepts like shared mobility and how do we ensure that public spaces are less dominated by cars?
