Fostering a new generation of wind energy professionals!

8 juli 2025

From June 23 – 27, our colleagues Niels Adema and Gerard Schepers from the professorship Wind Energy organized the International Small Wind Turbine Contest (ISWTC).

Eleven student teams from all over the world designed, built, and tested their small wind turbine in the Jules Verne Tunnel in Nantes at CSTB. We’d like to thank Caroline Braud for hosting us during the week.

The focus of the contest lies in the design of a small wind turbine for developing areas, taking into consideration not only energy production but also sustainability.

All designs were evaluated by an external jury of academic and industry experts consisting of Jessica Holierhoek, Chad Knowler, Ken Visser, Rob Rudolf, who were online and Matthieu Gelot, PhD, Bastien Duboc, and Koen Boorsma who supervised the wind tunnel tests in person.

We’d like to congratulate the Aiolos NTUA team for taking the overall 1st place of the ISWTC, the team from DTU Wind and Energy Systems on the prize for the highest energy production, and EURUS – Zewail City for the prize for the most sustainable design.

The 1st place award was presented by Niels Adema during the gala dinner at the Wind Energy Science Conference hashtag#WESC2025. Special thanks to the European Academy of Wind Energy for the opportunity to showcase the ISWTC at the conference gala dinner and also through a mini symposium.
